HMSA Primary Care Physicians Discuss Successful Transition to Value-Based Care

As highlighted in a recent peer-review article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), HMSA successfully transitioned almost all of its eligible primary care physicians to value-based payments. Not only was HMSA able to achieve the first statewide implementation of value-based payments in the nation, but the health plan successfully partnered with these physicians, helping them transform their practices to address population health. The end result was a statistically significant increase in quality.

This video features several primary care physicians in Hawaii discussing the change to value-based care and how they are now able to deliver better care to their patients and be more proactive. Dr. Mark Mugiishi, Executive Vice President and Chief Health Officer at HMSA, also offers comments on the productive partnership between the health plan and the physicians in Hawaii.
